What is the best quality fabric for the shell of a down comforter?

With all down products, we recommend 100% cotton, silk, or silk/cotton shells. These natural fibers can be tightly woven in high thread counts, and since they are all natural, they allow the down to breathe. Does a higher thread count shell make the product better?

Not necessarily. It is true that for down comforter shells to be down proof, only tightly woven high thread count fabrics can be used. And normally, the higher the thread count, the lighter the weight of the shell. But the weave of the fabric also plays an important role in the weight of the shell. A high thread count plain-weave cotton batiste shell will be lighter in weight than a higher thread count sateen weave shell. A lighter weight comforter shell allows for better lofting of the down fill. The result is a comforter that is softer and conforms better to the sleeper. At Cuddledown each ticking quality is carefully chosen to specifically work with a given quality of down.
