What's the difference between baffled and sewn-through comforters?
Answer
There are two basic types of comforter designs: baffled or sewn-through. Baffled comforters have vertical walls of fabric sewn between the top and bottom layer of the shell. These vertical walls create a deeper interior, allowing the down to loft to its maximum volume. A baffle also keeps the down from shifting, which prevents cold air from reaching the body. Baffled comforters are warmer than sewn-through comforters, but the extra work of sewing the baffle generally results in a more expensive comforter. The extra warmth of a baffled comforter is usually appropriate only for the cold seasons in cold climates. Most people living in modern homes will be more comfortable under a sewn-through comforter. There are no vertical walls of fabric in sewn-through comforters - the top layer of fabric is sewn directly to the bottom layer.
